I haven't heard much of people eating ground squirrel (actually, I think I've heard it's not a good idea), but I wonder how many of you eat grey squirrel. Grey squirrels are what we call tree squirrels, right? The ones with the big, bushy tails? I've been wanting to bring some home to cook in my dutch oven becuase I've heard they are very good. Also, we have an annual camping trip a bunch of guys go on and this may be an option for dinner one night.I am guessing you'd just gut it, skin it and cut it up like a rabbit. No? And how the heck to you avoid destroying all the meat? The ones I've shot get blown apart. Obviously I should hunt them with my 10-22 if I was gonna eat 'em, I'm thinkin'.

I have eaten tree squirrel it is really good. There is a recepie for squirrel melts somewhere on the forum. I made burritos and also had BBQ squirrel. Like most game you just need to watch it and not over cook it cause there isn't much fat in the meat. Squirrels are really tuff to skin so I suggest you look it up on youtube they have some interesting methods to it. good luck and have fun.

Have eaten lots of grey and the larger fox squirrels are the best IMO. Just skin and quarter and then lightly fry or actually sautee in butter until brown. I then pull the meat away from the bones and add to your favorite soup or make your own soup. They also make good stew with your favorite vegetables. I do not care for either grey or fox when just fried up, but when added like above, they are pretty tasty.

Be sure to check the regulations for seasons, bag limits and legal take methods.

Beer batter deep fry. MMMMM MMMMM!!! BBQ is also very good. Ya, skinning them is difficult but well worth the effort. We usually hunt tree squirrel with our 20s and 12s. Seems to keep the meat intact for the most part.

Grays are great eating .But like Rimrock said theres is a season on them.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Oh yeah, that's right. There is a season isn't there. The beer batter recipe sounds great. Thanks for the replies. And I wasn't even thinking about youtube, but I've seen a LOT of deer cleaning video. I bet there are a lot of squirrel cleaning vids too. I think I'm getting hungry!

I'm with you. Proper handling is everything. Nothing better than a well dressed beaver in the wintertime!I personally like beaver, but I would eat a little squirrel
