Went with Peter who got a special hunt permit for the Chimineas south unit... a blast!Only thing is he had to leave by the afternoon of the first day given his heart condition (His permit was for handicapped hunters, which also allows for a partner to come in). Well at least the scenery was awesome for him and he got to see a few more critters that day, alas not having a shotgun ready like we had on that first rabbit.Within the first hour too was also when I bagged a nice cottontail... he was just eating grass oblivious to anything around it but I had to be super careful to approach it before it got spooked. It was also very well camouflaged and Peter got to see him first but I was the one able to quickly get my shotgun, get out of the truck and fire... it was an intense moment. Also had to make sure Peter's dog was away from it after I finished gutting it and we were looking for a place to stash it in my truck :-)It was in a way like a private ranch hunt as the participants were following each other everywhere, but it got quiet by the end of the day... I got to climb a few steep hills and shot at a few quails alas they were quite fast... but I am getting better. That evening was spend in San Luis Obispo and I slept in the truck next to the DFG checkpoint for the following day. This is also when I got to see a huge quantity of quails in the morning but those birds were obviously spooked by the previous day and leave you like 1/10th of a second to fire at them. Gotta be fast and on the ready!!!I finished that hunt with some scouting near the northern section and looking for some wild pigs trails. Carrizo plains are not reputed having many but there are sighting close to a stream I looked for and also near private ranches. As I am writing this I just finished skinning the poor critter... maybe 2 lb of meat. A friend of mine is an expert cook and volunteered to make a nice BBQ this week-end for it.

New member here, howdy! Been at least a year since I've hunted Carrizo. I was a frequent visitor there. Been at least 3 since I shot a yote there that went down. Started to get crowded in the recent years, but yotes sure are jumpy there. 200yd + shots! It used to hold good amounts of quail, chukar, and dove. These pics make me want to go back soon!

Cool looking place.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Faust, I think the area they were in coyotes are not on the shooting list. They were hunting in a special permit area of the plain.

Thanks SJ; Do you have a resource on line I can view to get a bearing? I am planning a trip this year(after I load lead free dog poop) and dog is on the menu!
