Rich,Thanks for the post. Cool article that answers alot of the questions for the beginers even if it is almost 20 years old. And yes I am envious of that German in the lab coat that gets to shoot for 8 hours a day.Mc

great article then and now . I remember a guy I worked with tore up the webing between his thumb and index finger on one of the sideccking Dianas . Not sure what happened , was off that day . but we did have a " no cocking " on the airgus . does anyone remember the name of the airgun magazine that was out for 11-14 issues ( every other month , I think ) I know Lou ferigno was on a cover and I know there was an article on Frank Stalone . They did several articals on the .308s and .50 airguns . quackenbush , i think . that magazine gave me a "***** " reading that mag . it was like airgun porn . Andy

Some good points made also about the "opportunity" to shoot with an airgun over that of a firearm...Yesterday,I went out with one of my rimfires..(same area that I've only hunted with air rifles). First issue was much more care was required before taking a shot..second was noise...I was constantly glassing with my binocs making sure I had a good clear backstop..if any doubt,I do not shoot..same applies to air rifles,but even more so with a firearm(possible ricohets)...I've never seen anyone out there till yesterday...was glassing and spotted a lone hiker...so I stood up,cleared the rifle, and waved to him. We talked briefly...he asked how I spotted him, and I said by scanning area with the binocs..Think from now on,I'll just use my air rifles there..(I have another,more remote area I can use my rimfires..)

Why did I know you were going to have that issue Rich? It was a good magazine but just never got main streamed enough to make it take off.

I figured out a few years ago that there were definite advantages to an air rifle compared to a .22LR. I was shooting ground squirrels up by Fort Hunter Ligget and had in the past always used my Ruger 10/22. This time I brought three of my springers just for the hell of it. I guess because I had always shot my .22 I didn't realize how much louder it was that a pellet gun. I found due to the reduced noise level alone that the squirrels didn't spook as much equating to more shots and less down time. Later that year I went out to my buddies farm in Blythe that is just overrun with rabbits that come out of the canals. His family has about 6000 acres out there with various plots laid out in varying sizes and not all hooked together. In between the plots are other farmers, a number of public roads, and various houses. In the past when I used my .22 out there I was always concerned about my shot angles, ricochets, and the noise it made. With a pellet gun it was like nobody was the wiser, I didn't lose as many shots because I wasn't as worried about how far the pellets were going to go, and here again the rabbits didn't spook as easy. It was on that trip where I first had a rabbit come over to check out his buddy that I had just nailed and wound up getting him too. Because it was depredation shooting, if I had the semi auto capability of a Monsoon I would have been able to fill a gunny sack full of bunnies in no time.
