Finally put together my S&W, Stag, DPMS, etc. AR-15 in .17 Remington. Dan Carey built the upper with a SS barrel, not quite a bull barrel, and it is heaver than I expected. No pics because they all look the same! So short of asking John Henry on Coyote Gods, is anyone here shooting coyotes with a .17 Rem and what are you shooting? Oh yes, I expected to get an AR-15 .17 Rem mag with the upper and didn't. So where do I get a .17 mag?Thanks,Woo

I've got several Bolt Gun .17 Remington's. Don't know what to reccommend for a auto loader in .17 Rem. Magazines? Probably a 223 mag will work, you're out of my league. I'd probably try the 25 gr. V-max. Good luck

Same here. I have a bolt gun too (CZ Varmint). I've had good luck with Varget but I have no idea how it's pressure curve will get along with your gas gun. It shot well with both the 20gr v-max and the 25gr hollowpoint. If you can, find some Remington 7 1/2 primers. They were desined for the .17 remy. For some reason they are bad for punctured primers and the remington 7 1/2 has a stronger cup.I've never shot a coyote with it but I think I would stick with a 25gr hollowpoint. I did slam a good sized, chicken killing, feral dog with a 20gr v-max but I poked him right between the eyes.....I was afraid to try a boiler room shot with that frangible of a bullet.

A .223 mag will work for that .17 upper. As for ammo I'd just purchase it as that auto loader is going to fling it and you probably won't find it to reload. I have reloads from 15gr to 30gr bullets and they all shoot well in my converted .17 Rem Savage Weather Warrior.

Good point SJ........ GET A BRASS CATCHER!!!! That way you can save all your brass that you spend at the range or when shooting squirrels from a stationary position. When you're coyote hunting just let 'em fly. Factory ammo is very expencive and a brass catcher will pay for itself quickly.

I've killed yotes with both the 20 gr. v-max and the 25 gr. hp's, neither exits and most were bang flops or a quick spin and flop. Shot placement is the key. Would like to see what that black gun does as far as groupings.

Picked up high scope rings today and will mount a Leupold 3x9-40 Century. I'm not much for shooting paper; if it will do an inch or so I'm be happy because I don't shoot much over 100 yards. Just weighted the thing and it is 7lb without mag, ammo and scope. It feels heavier. I don't reload and am still looking for ammo. No one in the Bakersfield area has .17 Rem and all of the shops I checked wanted to sell me .17 HMR. Where are you all getting your ammo?Thanks, Woo

Pretty sure Midway sells em...For coyotes I'd get the 25gr Hornady rounds from Remington.The 17 Rem sure is a neat little round but one that really isn't too kind to non-reloaders.I'd try to save those fired brass...suckers are expensive.

Save the brass definitely. I've had to reload for years on my 17 Rem. I haven't seen a box for sale in a gun shop or store in over 20 years. This is why I started shooting .223. Still have the 17 Rem but haven't shot it in a few years.

Both Cabelas and Sportsman Warehuse carry 17 rem at 26.99 a box they are pricey.. Im looking at reloading soon too.. I didnt check at Bass Pro but maybe someone else has?

The Honady 25 gr hp is good for them coyotes but is very unforgiving in the slop shot department. The Barnes bullet is a little more forgiving but pricier. I load mine way to hot to publish loads for but they are a hoot to shoot and you can watch everything happen through your scope as you don't really blink when you shoot it. Like a 22 lr it has such low recoil....Walt

Does Barnes make a .172 bullet? I know Berger makes a nice 25gr bullet but I haven't seen it loaded commercially.

I stand corrected here, it is the Berger. I loaded some up on recomendation from a friend in the midwest that uses a 17 Rem. He makes a lot of long range shots at coyotes there, 300+ yards and he swears by that bullet for the ranges he shoots. I on the other hand shoot everything very close to me with the rare 100+ yard shot being my long stuff. The 25 hp works for what I use it for and is considerably cheaper to load also. That 17 is a great coyote round but as I always tell people, it is a very unforgiving round when you make a slop shot. What you can get by with shooting the 22's is iffy with those 17's as far as poor shot placement goes...Walt
