Took off on the scooter about 5 pm with the 788 .222 loaded up with 40 gr. Noslers. I took care of a little pocket of ground squirrels that were munching on sugar beets and then started cruising the back roads watching for a coyote. I spotted movement in a pasture adjacent a big wheat field and pulled to a stop. Sure enough, it is a coyote about 300 yards away sitting down facing head-on and looking right at me. He sure looked narrow in the scope and I kept waiting for him to get up and turn broadside. He decided to be a statue so I pulled over his head a little and cut loose....clean miss! I guess he was too close...haha!Drove around until the sun was getting close to the horizon and decided to head back home while I still had some shooting light. I was easing along the edge of an alfalfa field on my left and grassland on my right keeping an eye mainly on the grassland. When I got to the corner, there were some 1 x 6's on the H-brace which seemed like decent cover for the scooter in the low light conditions. While sitting on the scooter, I blew a short series on my Crit-R-Call Pewee and sat and watched. In about 10 seconds, I notice a small herd of cows about 500 yards out split up quickly like something ran between them. I kept looking with my naked eye but didn't see a thing. The glare of the western sky right after sunset made the ground look dark so I knew it would be difficult to spot a coyote. After a minute or so, I started feeling kind of ridiculous sitting on a scooter hoping a coyote would run up to me. I turned on the key and had my thumb on the start button when I spotted movement....quickly turned off the key to stop the clicking of the electric fuel pump and grabbed the Black Death Duece. The coyote was only 100 yards away quartering to me and staring right at me. There was a T-post in the way preventing a good hold on the point of the shoulder so I held behind the shoulder hoping to catch the back end of one lung. The little Nosler slammed into the yote hard and guts went flying! The bullet had exited the opposite flank and the coyote was doubled up biting at the baseball size exit wound. A quick follow up shot killed him instantly. What a mess but it sure was exciting!! Attached File  Coy_scoot1.jpg   96.02K   29 downloadsThis was my only cover to hide myself and the scooter while calling. The coyote was killed off to the right just about the direction the rifle is pointing. You can see the T-posts that got in the way of making a good shot.

Your persistance paid off again Bill. That might not look like much cover but it broke up your outine and that's all I think you need to do. I used to walk a long side an old horse we had at the ranch for cover. I shot deer in season as well as coyotes from right next to him. I guess those animals can't count legs? :(

That 40gr. Nosler sure put the hurt on that dog. Nice shooting!! Have you been doing much yote hunting? This weather up here at Yuba City has been so up and down the roads are all muddy one of those scooters would be great for here as well.

I haven't been doing any calling in my prime stuff on the edge of the foothills......it needs a rest after all the coyotes I killed in that area. Also, I am resting it because my youngest son is coming in from out of State and we haven't teamed up on yotes in several years. Here is Ken and I when he was 16 years old in 1985 and 4 coyotes he took with my M-340 Savage Hornet. The mini mag light attached to the barrel was perfect for head shooting coons out of a tree. The caller was made by Bill Anderson which employed an auto-type cassette player and was powered by a 12 volt motorcycle battery. Bill contracted me to record some animals in distress and that's how I got in the business. Ken is in eastern Oregon in a tent right now waiting for sunrise to give the Foxpro and his 6mm Rem a workout. Attached File  Ken_yotes.JPG   55.96K   28 downloads

Sorry to say, no. Just too much stuff going on around here. I plan on doing quite a bit after I get up to my cabin near Burney. But right now there is about 3 feet of snow there and I can't get to the cabin without walking in. I am not into that. Will wait until the snow melts. Hopefully I can get out up there in a few weeks. I know there are a lot of dogs there and nobody hunting them. Looking forward to it.
