Man, do I need to work on my alertness and reaction time. I hunted the opener at Don Edwards SF Bay NWR (southern tip of the bay, just north of San Jose) on saturday. Out there, it's almost all pass shooting...especially from the levee. You've almost got to have 360º vision to get any decent shots. I had some very good opportunities at a greenhead and many widgen, but it seems like every time they flew by me, I was looking in the other direction, and didn't see them coming until they had just about already passed me. I could have easily killed 25 coot in the first 2 hours I was there. They were flying across (slowly), directly in front of me, at about 10-20 yards all day long.Even though I didn't bring dinner home, it was still nice to be out there. I had to walk a little over 2 miles out on the levee to get away from the crowd of other hunters. There's supposed to be a 100yd separation between hunters out there. I think most of the hunters ignored the second zero in 100.

We hunted griz island opener. Had a great shoot, Pintail hen, couple greenheads, and some spoonies! All in all a great day.

I limited both days but my partner had a bad day on sunday and could't hit the water if he fell out of a boat. Sprig, mallard and mostly teal.

A bad opener at The Lodge this last weekend. 2 something bird average on Saturday and my guess will be a 1 something average for Sunday. Half of the fields they "flooded" were not flooded. Hopefully the season gets better. I also realized I don't like shooting my 11-87 so that will be for sale here real soon. It's Beretta or SBE II time I think.

It isn't knocking the ducks down I guess?

A few things - I don't like the 28" inch barrel, I've come from a 26 and learned that I really do like it - messes the sight picture up for me and didn't think it would. The gun is a little heavier than I'd like. Shouldering the gun feels wrong for some reason, I let it go when holding the gun in the shops for the first time due to possibilities like clothing, or just awkwardness with a new shotgun, but it's the gun and not me. All of this is leading to bad target acquisition. I shot a few ducks this weekend and did fine during dove, but I know it could be a lot better.I've only put (yes, I keep track) 27 - 2 3/4" lead shells (not including the couple that I tested the gas system out with back when I was having problems) and 7 - 3" steel shells through the thing, but I think it was enough to make me feel the differences. if I can get within $100 of what I paid, then I'll be happy and check out the Beretta again. I didn't purchase it originally because of the price on the 11-87, but it fit me a lot better. So we'll see, I guess.
