Lead Free 12 ga 3-1/2" 1-7/8 oz HW13 BB coyote load!

Recommended Posts

Not to long ago I bought a bunch of Federal 12 ga 3-1/2" Heavyweight 1-7/8 oz #5 shot loads on sale at Rogers Sporting Goods just to take the FHW #5 shot out of them so I could make goose loads with the shot.

Since I had 250 Federal 3-1/2" hulls with the wads, powder and primers in them I decided to reload some with HW13 BB shot and send some them off to Precision Reloading to be tested.

The shells I reloaded with 1-7/8 oz of HW13 BB shot tested well below Max pressure. Each one of these shells has 86 pellets in each shell. One of my favorite lead free loads for coyotes has been a 3" 1-1/2 oz loads of Remington HD BB shot and they have 70 pellets per shell.

Having 16 more pellets per shell should be a good thing if I can handle the extra recoil. LOL

I used a primer tray to count out 86 BB pellets. Two pellets fit in each hole. I weighed quite a few shot charges and they all weighed about a half pellet to a whole pellet light of 1-7/8 oz. I put the HW13 BB shot in a big bowl and just scoop the primer tray through the shot. All of the extra pellets run off the primer tray back into the bowl, leaving 86 pellets in the primer tray.

Today I shot two of the 3-1/2" 86 HW13 BB pellet loads at paper from 40 yards away.

I am pretty sure that 27 HW13 BB  pellets in a 9" circle at 40 yards is going to work pretty good on coyotes.

One of the FLITECONTROL wads was at the base of the pattern board at 40 yards away and the other wad was about 10 yards past the pattern board.

I love those flite control wads . They really work well provided you shoot them in an open choke . Guys try to shoot them in a ported or full and they are terrible then. That’s a great load . I would like to see it at 50 yards.

Yesterday I took the shot out of 48 Federal Heavyweight BB Coyote 3" 1-1/2 oz factory loads. I plan on loading this Federal Heavyweight BB shot in some of the 3-1/2" Federal Heavyweight 1-7/8 oz Turkey load hulls that I have. The 3" 1-1/2 oz loads have 62 FHW BB pellets per shell. I ended up loading 73 FHW BB pellets in  the 3-1/2" Federal hulls.

It shows you just how dense the 15g/cc FHW BB pellets are compared to the 12g/cc  HW13 BB pellets, there is 73  FHW BB pellets in 1-7/8 oz and there is 86 HW13 BB pellets in 1-7/8 oz.

Look below at the yardage increase the 15g/cc FHW  BB shot has over the 12g/cc HW13 BB shot.

HW13 BB shot at 1225 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 57.7 yards

Fed HW BB shot at 1225 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 94.6 yards.
