17 Winchester Super Magnum Availability

I found only one box for my new rifle and it was pure luck. Anyone seen any of the brand new 17 WSM rimfire anywhere?

I'll give them a jingle. My BP had one case last week that lasted a few hours.

Thanks

I probably won't get to shoot it until next weekend. Hopefully it will also cool off a degree or two.

Yes it was at the Manteca store. A member on another forum bought seven boxes of ammo from them. 209 area code.

Thanks John! Of course they were out now but I did hit it lucky in Destin, Florida after calling nearly 20 Bass Pros. I bought the only two boxes they had. MidwayUSA here in Missouri has an ETA of the end of August on additional ammo from Winchester so I jumped on it from Destin. $16 per box for the 20 grain ballistic tip. I paid $18.99 for the lone box I got here.

I just picked up some more 20 gr in Wisconsin. I would like to try the hps and the 25 gr. Where did you see it at? Most places will ship it to Missouri.

I am up to 11 boxes of ammo now. 6 of the 25 grain and 5 of the 20 grain - all polymer tip. I think that is enough. Winchester is spitting it out there in small shipments. Check with the large stores.

Well I wrung out the Savage B-Mag and most of a box of both the 20 grain and the 25 grain ballistic tip ammo. I used a Hawke Sidewinder 30 6-24 1/2 mil dot scope on 24x. As I read in the reviews the gun/ammo performed as well as my heavy barrel stainless Savage 17 HMR. My best five shot groups were with the 20 grain BT ammo at 100 yards and approximately 3/4". I shot 7 groups of 5 shots of the 20 and 25 grain. For me the 20 grain shot groups of about 1/4" less average than the 25 grain but the string of groups was too small to draw any conclusions from. Many bullets touched holes and I believe if you let the gun cool a few minutes in between shots with the very thin barrel you might see some 1/2" groups. One note was the point of aim for the 25 grain is about an inch low and a half-inch to the right of the 20 grain so pick one. The 20 grain HPs were nowhere to be found at stores yet but I am hoping they do even better than the ballistic tips as in my Savage 17 HMR. The magazine performed flawlessly and is really well designed and easy to load being rotary - in fact much easier to push cartridges in than a 10-22 magazine. You must make sure it clicks into the gun or it will fall out. I don't think it is really any louder than the 17 HMR and there is no recoil to speak of. It was about 80F and windless here.

A couple of good reviews/tests.

As in this picture the shots wandered a bit to the right as the barrel heated. Next time I will allow the barrel to cool in between shots. That could make a difference on a 300 yard shot.

Nice write-up. Decent grouping for sure.

Good article where they did some testing on coyotes with the 17 WSM. Basically, 8/10 shot dropped in their tracks with heart/lung hits and 2 went 30-40 yards before dying. They recommend 100 yards or less for larger coyote sized game. They did field autopsies on all of them.

That's a good article. But it does come down to shooting ability also. I can load my .17 Remington for less money and it does the same or better job. But my .17Rem spits them out at 4250fps and over 800foot pounds energy. But I'll probably get one of these once the hype passes.

It will still be interesting to see who else makes a rifle for the 17WSM. I like savage but other offerings could be nice to see too. Maybe I should just get a barrel for the TC Contender, but a repeater would be nice. It would also be nice to see the fps on a shooters chrony to see if the round is really what they claim? Looking at the arm holding the rifle in the Video, I thought they had "Chewbacca" shooting it! LOL It does look like a promising load though Brant. For Fox & Bobcat, this may be a fur savers dream. Thanks for the report!

Is the recoil low enough on the 17 Remington to see the impacts?

I have an airgun buddy in Sweden and several of his family members work for Sako in Finland. I am contemplating arranging a purchase (eventually) on the new Sako Quad Range rifle when they add the 17 WSM (which now sounds inevitable). Beretta stopped importing them to the US but I can get one shipped direct to a local FFL much more inexpensively than what they would cost here. I would actually but it direct from the factory (which they normally don't do to individuals).

I keep hearing the list is expanding. CZ was the last to indicate they will eventually add the 17 WSM.

Yes the recoil is very light and impacts are easily seen. That's why I built the gun in that caliber. My gun was built on a Savage Weather Warrior that was chambered in .223. I ordered a new barrel chambered in .17Rem and had a gunsmith friend do the installation. I enjoyed it for several years now and have bullets from 15gr to 30grs. I shoot Berger 25gr bullets at around 4000fps and they are awesome.

Another good video of a test of the 17 WSM on Prairie Dogs.
