Inexpensive Ca. legal AR?

12 posts in this topic

I have a Friend that is trying to find an AR for his son in law. Does anyone know of an inexpensive AR and where to purchase? He is trying to find one before Xmas. Thanks!

Grant, Turners had some for $599, but doubt if any longer. The sale started last Friday and had only 50 per store. I cannot recall the brand of the rifle, but seemed to be semi-decent for the money, according to the reviews I read & handling them myself. Brand was a two syllable word starting with the letter "B". They are made in either north or south Carolina.

They also had some S&W M&P's for a little more $$, depending on the model. This gun would be an even better choice IMO, and if memory serves me right, a better warranty.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, and good luck

Sometimes buying a lower and upper separate is a bit cheaper if you cant find a complete rifle locally.

Any upper and lower should go together

Buy this Upper, cheapest I've seen

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/416788?cm_vc=S014

And this Lower if you can find a dealer that has them in stock

Otherwise a Lower like this

Any complete AR sold in ca will have the BB. If you buy the Upper and Lower separate, not all Lowers come with the BB installed. You can do it yourself the BB is only like $20.

A lower without a BB is legal as long as there is no upper attached to it.

Thanks for that advice Dave. Say for instance you bought an AR online, and had the upper shipped seperately. Could the Lower go to the FFL, and then be picked up and then install your own BB?

Yeah the lower is the part that you have to DROS. The upper can be shipped to your house (just like buying a shotgun barrel). You can install the BB yourself when you get the lower, just to be legal, you cant have the Centerfire upper attached without a BB.

(you can have a Rimfire upper on a lower without a BB, FYI)

I bought the S&W Sporter about a month ago. Not an AR expert, but it seems great to me! And with my shaky military open sights skills and the stock BUIS rear set up shooting 55gr PMC mil spec ammo put 60+ rounds into a 6" circle at 100 yards. Reviews on it were great, and from my exposure would have to agree.

Dealer kept trying to talk me into something fancy and expensive, but this fits exactly what I wanted (at half the price of the fancy guns) - what we called back in Idaho a truck gun. Basic rifle for basic needs - exactly what the Mini-14 was perfect for. I am not on a SWAT team, nor do I do match shooting or 3 gun mathces. Just basic plinking and shooting - so this is perfect.

And liek me, once you get teh basic rifle, you can always order yourself different uppers for different needs.
