Shopping for a new rifle.

15 posts in this topic

Well the wife is going back to work part-time and my gun budget is starting to look pretty good, as long as I can keep her from spending it on more hand guns (she has purchased two in the last two months, a M&P 40 and a Ruger 9mm) I'll be able to purchase a new gun. Just trying to decide on rifle or shotgun.

Let your wife go hog wild,

You don't see that to often.

Tell her it is an investment,

incourage her.

She knows that if she wants it she can have it, looking at a Ruger or a M&P 22 to practice with so she can shoot a lot more than using either the M&P 40 or the Ruger LC9 .

Depends on what you want to use it for.

Yep. The available hunting opertunities in your area could make a big difference too. Where I live, a shotgun can keep me hunting most all year. My rifles don't see near as much use.

The Ruger 10-22 is a great little plinker,

It is not expensive, and it is dependable.

The only con in my opinion is the clip,

It needs a larger clip, also inexpensive.

This next rifle will be a "want" not a need, lol I have a 300 Win Mag, Win Feather weight in 270, a ruger 243, a 25 wssm in an AR, 223 in AR, Savage 223, Mossberg 17 HMR, 30-30 lever action, Henry 22 (golden boy) CZ 22, a couple of old 22s and shotguns, Win Super X Model 1 in 12 gauge Browning BPS(turkey model) 12 gauge, 20 gauge side by side. As you can see I really don't need a new rifle just want one, I'm thinking about a custom (everyone needs a least one custom) in 6.5 x 47 lapua or some other cal. for a long range shooter.

Ever considered a blackpowder cartridge rifle like a Sharps or a Remington rolling block? Big slow bullets at long range with iron sights is alot of fun! Booom..ssssssssssssssssssssssssss...TWANG!!!!

clampdaddy, I have thought about a Sharps or maybe even a traditional muzzel loader kit from Track of the Wolf.

There are alot of companies that are turning out some really nice Sharps reproductions. An American made rifle will generally cost about a grand more than a comparable Italian made rifle. I have one in 45-110 and it is a hoot but I would strongly recommend a 45-70. The cost of brass really goes up once you go bigger than the 45-70.

I have considered getting a reproduction like the Sharps (Billy Dixon model) not sure of the cal.

Okay - you just lost any sympathy I was feeling!!

You need a .45 Colt lever.

EVERYONE should own at least one.

Fun as hell to shoot with standard and cowboy loads, and with Corbon/Buffalo bore/etc hunting loads, serious game rifle ranges =< 100yards.
