Bowfishing

7 posts in this topic

Questions...lot's of them.

1. Does anyone bowfish around here?

2.What equipment do I need? Would like to use my longbow.

3. Where can I bowfish and what legally, can I catch as well as legal stipulations such as yards out any specifics?

Any help appreciated!

Thanks!

El

1. I do. Both Longbow and Compound

2. AMS Bottle Reel, Fishing Arrows, Traditional Bow mounting bracket

3. Where are you located? According to DFG you can pretty much bowfish anywhere it is legal to rod&reel fish. However, Individual lakes and cities may have their own rules.

Best thing is to go out with someone that has done it before. A boat makes it a bunch easier, but shoreline and docks can be good too.

Most archery shops carry bowfishing gear. You can also order from BassPro, Cabelas, Midway USA, Backwater Bowfishing etc.

Traditional Mount. Rubber straps hold the bracket on the bow tight. No modifications to the bow.

AMS Bottle Reel.

Solid Fiberglass Arrows with Muzzy Carp Point and Safety Slide. (Heavy to keep momentum in water)

Probably the easiest way to get setup is to buy a "kit" and the traditional bracket

Here is my first one from a few years ago at Big Bear Lake.

I am planning on setting up a group trip to Big Bear pretty soon. Did it last year with 6 guys. Rented a pontoon for the day. When you split it 6 ways its pretty cheap. Carp should be spawning soon too

Big Bear Carp Roundup (Tournament) is coming up soon too.

Wow! Thanks Dave! A wealth of information. Love your pics!

That sounds like a good idea with a group of folks going in on the trip. How much does that cost?

Thank you so much for your advice!

Don't forget your CA fishing license! El, unless you want to get your longbow wet, I'd get a bow designed for bowfishing. PSE sells a recurve with the reel and all and it's not too expensive. A 30-50lb draw pull is all that's needed to successfully take those fish. Also, water has a distortion value that one has to account for when shooting at fish. They not only look larger (water magnifies them) but they are also deeper than they look. I usually like aiming below the fish about 3-4 inches. Good luck!

Yeah I plan on doing the tournament with my brother. We will be shooting the shoreline and docks. My buddies family has a house up there that we usually stay in. I'm trying to see if its available that weekend. I'm also trying to go up there either the 9th & 10th, or the 16th & 17th to do some scouting/practice.
