204 Ruger Range Report

3 posts in this topic

I took the Rem 700 with the 9 twist PacNor barrel and the action work by NorCal Precision to the range for more load tests today. I loaded some 40 VMax and Berger 50 gr 204s to test. I used the load data posted on RugerHunting.Com for guidance and all my powders today were Hogdon. The brass I used today was not preped and so I did expect some flyers and I was not disappointed. I'll just list the best groups that were shot today with the five shot size and the size with the flyer out.50 Berger, H4895, .89/.3540 VMax, H322, .66/.4740 VMax, VARGET, 1.08/.8940 VMax, H4895, .68/.40Here are the groups that were shot on 6/11/06.40 VMax, AA2015, .55/.4139 BK, AA2015, .69/.34The chrono seemed like too much work to take to the range today so I don't have any velocity data. I determined a few things that should be done in the near future to work toward better groups. First, it's time for new glasses. Second, This rifle needs a different scope. Third, it's time to prep some brass. :)A17Shooter

Ditto Dan.... A17, have you come to a conclusion on your 204 load testing yet?Reason I ask is, I've tested over 400 rounds in approx 3 dozen loads with 7 different powders over the last 3 months or so and am still not 100% finished. Close, Very close, but not completely done. Oh, a few groups were made with factory ammo also. Anyway, since I am using my 204 exclusively for coyotes, I really prefer the 40gr Nosler over the 32gr V-max, even though I have tested both a lot.So far my favorite load is the 40gr Nosler ballistic tip with (approx) 30grs of BLC-2 powder, Win brass, CCI 450 "mag" primer for a muzzle velocity of 3800 fps in 75 degree temp. "Average" 5 shot groups run at approx 5/8" at 100 yards. Lots of 3 or 4 shots making one hole. That load has given me the Highest velocity & Best accuracy. The part that I am not finished with is varying that 30gr charge by 1/10th gr in either direction. Other powders that has worked well &/or still shows promise is W748 (but did not check velocity), H4895, RL10X & Benchmark. RL15 did good, but velocity was much lower. I could not get H335 to work.Anyone else settled on, or almost settled on a load for their 204? Shooter John? (I think you told me before, but hey, it's my memory I (almost) miss the most. LOLFrank
