Cover Scents

9 posts in this topic

I was going to buy some coon urine today but thought I would ask if anyone has ever tried it. I always use cover scents everytime I go out in the field for yotes mostley I use rabbit urine and earth scents sometimes a skunk scent but not since it fell over on the bed of my truck(that stunk for about two weeks). I just don't really know the relationship of coons and yotes to know if that would hold them up or just be a great cover. Any info would be great thanks guys.

I haven't used cover scents since I trapped muskrats and beavers many years ago. Personally I would rather use the wind to my advantage than having to deal with attempting to mask human scent. Trying to cover up even a deodorant is almost impossible let along the soaps that are on the market today. I wouldn't bother with the cover scent. Next time I drive by and smell something I'll keep and eye out for you Jeff. Or should I say Stinky!:lol:

I agree with ShooterJohn. Coyotes have a very acute sense of smell. If they get down wind and are able to smell the cover scent I am sure that they would be able to pick up the human scent even though it was mingled with the other. Keep the wind in your face and the sun at your back.

Well any type of cover scent is better than none. Yes coyotes have a very good sense of smell but you can't always have the wind in your face on every stand and I like to have every advantage that I can. I have shot a lot of yotes using different scents they give me more confidence and that is what I like to have most in the field. I would say give them a chance you only have to gain nothing to lose.

I use the coon scent on my boots when I hunt white tail here in MO. I scub the outer rubber with scent killing soap and then apply the coon scent before I walk in to the stand. The same practice might keep you from getting winded by your tracks, but you just wont beat that coyotes nose.

To a coyote you will smell like a human that got pee'd on by a coon. If you are going to use a cover scent I would get some male coyote urine. Play on their territorial instincts. And you could use it for misting also. But, the bottom line is that it gives you some feeling of confidence and that is a good thing...Walt
