Howling for coyotes

12 posts in this topic

I haven't had much time to post on the boards because I am way behind on call orders. I decided to take the time right now to help shed some light on calling coyotes with a howler. With mating season being upon us, the dominate coyotes will not tolerate a stranger in their territory. Most of the time, I recommend starting off a stand with one or two lonesome howls.

Wow, does that sound good. What a caller. Rich, you are the man with a howler.

After giving them one or two howls, I like to wait in silence for a few minutes because coyotes often approach in silence. Sometimes you may get a vocal answer in the form of a bark/threat howl. If you hear a coyote angrily answer you, simply how back at him again.

If you have a coyote hang up out of range to howl at you, or just hang out there in plain sight, just out of range, you can give him a series of puppy squeals, or maybe a series of my version of the so called "estrous chirp"
