Discovery stock

15 posts in this topic

I was not real pleased with the length of stock nor the finish on my Discovery. I added a recoil pad, ground it to fit, and refinished the stock. I used a light oak stain, then three coats of Tung Oil, then three coats of stock finish for hardness. I think it improved things.Before:post-38-1226434111_thumb.jpgpost-38-1226434143_thumb.jpgAfter:post-38-1226434202_thumb.jpgpost-38-1226434217_thumb.jpg

That makes all of the difference right there Rod. :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow: Very nice job and the finish looks so much better. Can I ask what recoil pad you went with and did you sand the stock or use steel wool on it?

I was going to say that too Cliff. Just let me get my hands on it and I'll bang it into something. :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow:

Hey, Guys. I won't need any help with banging it up. It maybe looks better but won't improve my shooting. :smiley_kewlpics: Thanks for the compliments though.John, The recoil pad ia a 'J.C. Higgins.' Couldn't find one that was marked 'Discovery.' I completely sanded the stock. The factory finish comes off very easily.

Thanks Rod, I'll keep my eyes open for a pad with matching screw holes. Since finding a J.C. Higgins recoil pad might be difficult as they stopped using the name in 1964. :smiley_kewlpics:

I have my grandfather's old JC Higgins .30-06 rifle with the nice Mauser bolt on it. Great rifle and the stock has plenty of dings on it from lots of use!Darren

Nice work, Rod. :) Things must've been slow around the homestead. :D Did you put that recoil pad on because of the additional recoil from the heavy pellets?? :smiley_turkey_pop_up_log:

Nice Looking rifle!I am dreading winter as I hate snow and being stuck inside so much but, when it gets too cold and deep to do much outside..I'm gonna sand mine down and refinish it too.I haven't decided on a pad yet...I kinda like the short stock for carrying around the woods.
